About
Rebalance Gender is a directory of women and gender-expansive folks (trans, non-binary, genderfluid, etc.) in electronic music, including producers, DJs, and vocalists.
The site's goal is to make it easier to discover, book, and celebrate artists who have historically been under-represented on lineups and in studios.
Rebalance Gender started out of a personal project by New Kitty when she was learning how to DJ and wanted to find artists with more gender diversity. She started a list of producers in a text note, then as it grew it turned into a spreadsheet, and when it had reached over 1,000 artists, she decided to create this site.
Users and artists are welcome to submit additional artists, or to suggest revisions to entries for artists in the directory. I've tried to only add artists' pronouns when they were clear from their own pages or articles about them. If I've gotten pronouns or other details incorrect (or if anyone's pronouns have changed), feel free to send in a revision request and I'll review it. (The review process is there to avoid people tampering with the site's content.)
Rebalance Gender was inspired in particular metoodjs, which highlights pervasive gender bias and abuse in the community. It was also inspired by other efforts to address gender imbalance, including Discwoman—especially their motto "AMPLIFY EACH OTHER"—and other efforts such as the directory Female: Pressure, Book More Women, Support Women DJs, NOT BAD FOR A GIRL, Get In her Ears, Femme Bass Mafia, DNB Girls, and Bass n Babes.
